What is YWAM?

Youth With A Mission is a global movement of Christians from many cultures, age groups, and Christian traditions, dedicated to serving Jesus throughout the world. Also known as YWAM (pronounced « WHY-wham »), we unite in a common purpose to know God and to make Him known.

Back when we began in 1960, our main focus was to get youth involved in missions. Today, we still focus on youth, and we also involve people aged 8 to 80. We currently work in more than 1,100 locations in over 180 countries, with a staff of over 18,000.

One of the joys of participating in YWAM is to work with people from many nations. YWAM’s staff (known as « YWAMers ») come from over 130 countries, including places like Indonesia, Nepal, Mozambique, and Colombia. In France, there are many different locations where you can do a DTS, Secondary School or short term.

Launching waves of missionaries into the world since 1960

JEM a été conçu en 1956, par Loren Cunningham, un étudiant de 20 ans dans un institut de théologie des Assemblées de Dieu aux États-Unis1. Alors qu’il voyageait aux Bahamas, il a eu une vision sur une organisation qui partagerait la Bonne Nouvelle du Royaume de Dieu sur tous les continents.

L’organisation est fondée aux États-Unis en 1960 par Loren Cunningham et Darlene, sa femme. La première mission a eu lieu au Liberia pour construire une route à travers la jungle afin de desservir un centre pour lépreux.

En 1964, l’organisation est devenue non-dénominationnelle.

JEM a été affiliée à l’ONG humanitaire chrétienne Mercy Ships depuis sa fondation en 1978 jusqu’à 2003.

En 1983, JEM a reçu le statut d’organisation de jeunesse au sein de la Fédération protestante de France.
